Healthy, affordable choices at the new KweNu Juice and Salad Bar

Earlier this week I stopped by KweNu, a new juice and salad bar in Kisasi.  The menu was full of health promoting juice blends and salads at surprisingly affordable prices.  I settled on a pineapple mint detox juice, and I was not disappointed!  A mix of pineapple, mint, ginger, lemon, and orange, the juice was delicious and once my toddler had a taste of it, he didn’t want to give it back!

KweNu, a Swahili work that means “your place,” was started by Nuba Elamin, who grew up in Uganda but then spent several years studying and working in the US, Liberia, and Kenya.  With a Masters in International Development from Clark University in the US, Nuba thought she would enjoy working in Nairobi, the NGO hub of sub Saharan Africa.  After working at a few jobs in Nairobi but not finding one she really enjoyed, she decided to leave the 9 to 5 world and focus on a shoe business she had started, Buqisi Ruux, which makes stylish high heels with kitenge fabrics.

When Nuba moved back to Uganda in 2014, her mother suggested the idea of opening a yoga studio with aerobics, zumba, and a juice bar.  At that time, Nuba did a little research and then forgot about it to focus on Buqisi Ruux.

When she recently discovered the available shop space in Kisasi, Nuba remembered her mom’s idea and decided to try out a juice bar.  She jumped into the idea enthusiastically and spent several months doing extensive research on juicing.

She was surprised to learn about the dangers of a bad diet and all of the health benefits of drinking fresh juice.  She started trying out different combinations of fruit and vegetable juices and noticed an immediate change in her own health  – whereas she used to sleep until 9 and go through the day without much energy, she was now waking up easily at 630 and feeling energized throughout the day.  She found that she was able to work out for much longer without getting tired, and her skin improved.

KweNu’s salads and juices are loaded with fresh fruits and vegetables, which helps to boost metabolism, help with digestion, improve skin, boost energy, and lower the risk of cancer and other diseases.  For pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, it is even more important to eat as many fruits and vegetables as possible to give your baby the best start in life and to boost your own immune system and energy level to get through all of those sleepless nights.

Nuba’s vision for KweNu is to offer high quality and healthy products at an affordable cost, with the convenience of delivery anywhere in Kampala for only 2000 shillings.   In the next few years, she would like to open more franchise locations around Kampala to enable people to eat healthy, affordable, convenient foods.
